The NSPA/WINS Henry Messer Award for Advocacy in Neurosurgery, awarded by the CNS Foundation, is an award that recognizes an individual who has demonstrated sustained contributions to the professional development, mentorship, and advancement of individuals from underrepresented backgrounds within neurosurgery.
Dr. Henry D. Messer (1927–2014) was a member of the neurosurgical community and advocate who contributed to increased awareness and support for LGBTQ+ physicians. He practiced as an openly gay neurosurgeon during a time when this was uncommon, demonstrating courage and a strong commitment to supporting professional opportunity and participation for individuals across a broad range of backgrounds within medicine
This award recognizes an individual who has demonstrated sustained contributions to the professional development, mentorship, and advancement of individuals from underrepresented backgrounds within neurosurgery. Contributions may include research, education, mentorship, community engagement, or advocacy that strengthens and supports continued growth of the specialty.
An individual may either self-nominate or may be nominated by another individual for this award.
The award consists of $1,000 in award funding with the hope that this will allow them to further continue their work in this space.
