DEI Scholar Project on Healthcare Disparities

Overall Goal

This award is given to an individual to examine and understand the presence or causes of health care disparities in neurosurgery.

More specifically, the goal of this award is to:

• Contribute scholarly data that guides improvements in healthcare equity and inclusion for patients
• Expand the cadre of informed experts who can provide leadership in DEI efforts

Details

The award for this program is up to $5,000 and proposed project must take place within the United States. 

Award funding is to be used to cover expenses directly related to the scholar project as submitted including but not limited to testing protocols, staff, tools and technology. 

Requirements for Applying

• Must be a CNS member in good standing (www.cns.org/membership)
• Must be neurosurgical resident or practicing neurosurgeon based within the United States
• Able to conduct a one-year project during the upcoming academic year and must be implemented within the United States
• Be able to provide the following materials during the application process:
  • Letter of Recommendation from current Program Director/Chair or Chair of Department
  • A statement of thesis for change that applies to the neurosurgical domain
  • Up to 3 examples of case studies, article or research that provides evidence for the need for the pilot project
  • Proposed budget for the scholar project, including testing protocol, staff, tools, and technology
• If selected, applicant must prioritize attending the CNS Annual Meeting to present findings as well as prioritize the CNS for all submissions resulting from the award during the selection year (including Annual Meeting abstracts and Neurosurgery publications)
• If selected, applicant will be expected to provide a report of activities highlighting the most significant/relevant learning during the study (within 2 months of award period ending)
• If selected, application must provide a brief statement (500-800 words) on how receiving a CNS Foundation award has impacted his/her career in a positive manner
