The International Brain and Spine Tumors Observership, awarded by the CNS Foundation in collaboration with the Department of Neurosurgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS), who specializes in personalized, patient-specific treatments for brain and spine tumors, leveraging the molecular signature of each tumor alongside our clinical trials, breakthroughs, leading-edge technologies, and the safest, most effective treatment options, will benefit the awardee through a comprehensive learning experience that emphasizes observation, consultation, teaching, and research in which the team will share their expertise with the awardee. While no direct patient care services will be involved, neurosurgical oncology is an exciting specialty centered on the multi-disciplinary treatment of brain and spine tumors. Notable advancements include the development of new technologies and insights into cancer biology, contributing to enhanced patient care and the ISMMS team will be sharing their expertise in these areas as part of the observership program.

The International Endovascular Observership, awarded by the CNS Foundation in collaboration with UC Davis, is a CAST-accredited fellowship program where the awardee will be able to see the full spectrum of endovascular care including but not limited to placement of flow diverters and intrasaccular devices, mechanical thrombectomies, TCAR, CAS and AVM embolization. UC Davis participates in clinical trials to test new technologies for the treatment of intracranial aneurysms. UC Davis is part of the UC Stroke Consortium Robotics Workgroup which strives to introduce robotic procedures to endovascular care with the overarching goal to eventually provide remote robotic care for stroke patients in rural areas.

Details

The International Visitorship, awarded by the CNS Foundation in collaboration with Stanford University, is a 3-6 month long visitorship that was created with the objective of sharing experience with not only current residents and fellows, but also neurosurgeons and residents from all over the country and the world. The awardee as part of the observership will be participating in clinical practice during her/his time at Stanford. She/He will have an opportunity to assist the senior neurosurgeon with all the surgeries and clinics, where the awardee will be guided within every part of the surgery, including the OR step-up, patient position, exposure, tumor dissection and removal, and reconstruction. In OR, the awardee can acquire the knowledge about the surgery under the 4K endoscopic view or 3D microscopic view. The awardee will also participate in the skull base surgery conferences, review clinical cases and surgical planning in the Stanford Neurosurgical Simulation and Virtual Reality Center, as review skull base anatomy and participate in research projects based at the NeuroTraIn center, Stanford’s skull base laboratory. Upon completion of the observership, the awardee will have obtained a full understanding of skull base anatomy, pathologies, and surgical approaches while also understanding the importance and strength of an interdisciplinary team that works together.

Details

The International Spine Observership, awarded by the CNS Foundation in collaboration with Duke University, is an immersive 3- to 6-month experience where the awardee will spend time with the renowned surgical faculty (neurosurgery and orthopedics) of Duke Spine.  The observership is tailored to the awardee's interests, and there is the opportunity to spend dedicated time--both in the clinic and the operating room--with spine surgeons who specialize in minimally invasive surgery, deformity surgery, spinal oncology, etc.  There is also ample opportunity to participate in virtual and in person educational conferences.
